It seems to me that it is close to their blood color so they would think it was bad ass. Just as the Bloods probably chose their color for the same reason. As far as Lori Petty being a regular she probably didn't because she had a starring role on a short lived TV series also on Fox the same year. It was Booker, which was on off shoot of 21 Jump Street with Richard Greico. I thought is was funny Matt let Buster get in on in the store, which was a crime scene and had a dead guy in it. Isn't that against the law? Great podcast. I found it randomly when someone mentioned it on GetGlue. I just started rewatching the show. I haven't seen it since it's original broadcast. It would be cool if they did another TV movie of how they are now. Or even better a cinema movie. Hollywood is bringing everything else back, why not right?
